Newfoundland Labrador Basketball Association: Programs
Sport Meets STEM 🏀🔬🤖
The NLBA is proud to parter with SCWIST to offer free STEM & Sport Sessions!!
The NLBA is excited to offer
three unique programs for the 2026–27 season that bring sport and STEM together! These programs will help participants explore how
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are used in sport—from athlete performance and basketball skills to robotics and ocean technology. At the same time, participants will discover how sport can provide a fun, hands-on way to learn and apply STEM concepts.
Sport Science Information Sessions
Discover the science behind athlete development and performance.
Through monthly Zoom sessions, athletes, coaches and families will learn about important areas of sport science and how they contribute to athlete development, health and performance.
Topics will include nutrition, rest and recovery, biomechanics, sport psychology, and more.
Each session will connect the science to practical information that athletes can use in their everyday training and development.
Dunkin’ the ROV
Where sport, technology and Newfoundland & Labrador’s ocean environment come together.
Dunkin’ the ROV is a hands-on program designed to bridge the gap between STEM and sport while helping young people explore new interests and possibilities.
Participants will be introduced to coding, ocean technology, marine safety and robotics as they learn about the process of building and operating an ROV (remotely operated vehicle).
The program will also connect participants with Newfoundland & Labrador’s marine ecosystem, providing an engaging way to explore how science and technology are used right here in our province.
Jr. NBA & STEM
Learn the science behind the game!
Jr. NBA & STEM combines basketball development with hands-on STEM learning to help young athletes understand the science behind the skills they use on the court.
Through weekly group sessions and small-sided games, participants will develop basketball fundamentals such as shooting, passing and dribbling while exploring concepts such as movement, force, angles, balance and other science found within the game.
It’s basketball development with a STEM twist—giving young athletes the opportunity to play, learn, experiment and discover at the same time.
