Newfoundland Labrador Basketball Association: Programs

NLBA 3x3 & Skills Development Program
Grades 4–6 | Winter 2027
Develop Skills. Build Confidence. Play the Game
The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) is excited to offer a 10-week 3x3 & Skills Development Program for athletes in Grades 4–6!
This program focuses on developing fundamental basketball skills, improving decision-making, building confidence, and helping young athletes develop a love for the game.
Our approach goes beyond traditional drills. By incorporating Constraints-Led Coaching and Transformational Coaching, we create an engaging, athlete-centred learning environment where players are encouraged to explore, solve problems, make decisions, and learn through playing basketball.
Our Coaching Approach
Constraints-Led Approach – Learning Through the Game
Rather than relying solely on repetitive drills and instructions, our coaches design activities that encourage athletes to discover solutions through movement and gameplay.
By adjusting elements such as space, rules, player numbers, and scoring opportunities, we create situations where athletes naturally develop skills such as:
- Ball handling, passing, shooting, and finishing
- Spacing and movement without the ball
- Reading defenders and making decisions
- Offensive and defensive awareness
- Creativity, adaptability, and problem-solving
Athletes learn not just how to perform a skill, but when, why, and how to use it in a game.
Transformational Coaching – Developing the Whole Athlete
Our coaches focus on creating a positive, supportive environment where athletes feel valued, challenged, and motivated to improve.
We emphasize confidence, effort, teamwork, communication, and personal growth. Athletes are encouraged to ask questions, take ownership of their learning, try new things, and understand that mistakes are an important part of development.
Our goal is to develop not only better basketball players, but confident, resilient young people who enjoy being active and working with others.
What Does a Session Look Like?
Each 45-minute session combines purposeful skill development with opportunities to apply those skills in game situations.
20 Minutes – Skill Development
Athletes participate in engaging, game-like activities designed to improve fundamental basketball skills. Coaches use modified challenges and constraints to encourage exploration, decision-making, and skill development.
20 Minutes – 3x3 Gameplay
Athletes put their skills into action through small-sided 3x3 games. With fewer players on the court, athletes experience more touches, more decisions, greater involvement, and more opportunities to learn.
The remaining time is used for session transitions, introductions, and reflection.

Why 3x3 Basketball?
3x3 basketball provides an excellent development environment for young athletes. With fewer players and more space to participate, athletes have increased opportunities to handle the ball, make decisions, attack, defend, and communicate with teammates.
Combined with our athlete-centred coaching approach, 3x3 helps bridge the gap between practising skills and successfully applying them during games.
